Xiaomi 12 Pro 5G Review: Design and Display
The Xiaomi 12 Pro 5G comes riding in a huge rectangular box. Clearly visible from the size of the package is the care and support that the brand provides along with the smartphone. Apart from the mobile device, the contents of the package include a 120W adapter, a USB Type-C cable, a SIM eject tool, a transparent silicone case, a quick start guide as well as a Type-C to 3.5mm headphone adapter.
Upon opening the package, you’ll come face to face with the 6.73-inch shiny display of the Xiaomi 12 Pro 5G, having an 89.6% screen-to-body ratio. The screen appears to be pretty large lengthwise. Picking up the device in your hands will make you forget all about its weight. The curved edges of its display will be the first thing that catches your eye. Yes, the all-new Xiaomi 12 pro 5G comes with a curved display. Its sleek surface turns sideways elegantly and lights up your mood, unlike anything. Moreover, the screen comes with a protection of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.
Flip over the phone and you’ll be staring at its plastic back, which has a subtle glittery touch and a matte feel. The smartphone is offered in three colours in India, Couture Blue, Opera Mauve, and Noir Black. We were able to get our hands on its black colour model. The glitter sparkles quickly take the limelight when you take the phone for a night out. The rear triple camera system along with the flashlight is neatly fitted into the mount, which is body-coloured. The mount is divided into several compartments proportionally, to fit each camera and flashlight. This makes them appear as if they are resting in separate rooms, but you have a top cross-sectional view of their house.
The frame of the smartphone is slightly darker than the body colour. On the right side lie the volume and power buttons while the left side is left blank. At the bottom lies its USB Type-C port, SIM card tray as well as one of the stereo speakers. The device does not come with a headphone jack, which Xiaomi compensates for by providing the customers with the Type-C to 3.5mm headphone adapter. At its top lies the other of the two speakers and an LED charging indicator. Again, each feature on its exterior rests within its marked territory. Some may find this unique design highlight appealing while others may think the smartphone is better off without them. Bringing the phone to life has been made extremely hassle-free by the brand. Unlike other smartphones, which require you to undergo the initial setup process, the Xiaomi 12 Pro takes you directly to the home screen as soon as you long press the power button. This may appear a lot more convenient to many. The screen resolution is 1,440 x 3,200 pixels and the aspect ratio is 20:9, with about 521ppi density. The 120Hz AMOLED DotDisplay immediately pleases the eye with its colourful lighting, brightness, and contrast balance. But when taken under direct sunlight, the screen brightness has to be set to at least 70-80% for it to be clearly legible. The experience of watching videos on Youtube is very life-like. The video streaming quality can be upgraded to a maximum of 2,160 pixels at a rate of 60fps in HDR. The clarity offered is amazing, and so is the colour scheme and screen lighting. The curved edges of the smartphone along with its stereo audio system work in favour of providing an altogether cinematic experience. Watching movies and TV shows on Netflix was also commendable. The stereo audio of the Xiaomi 12 Pro works decently and complements the whole streaming process.
Gaming on the smartphone was tested by playing Asphalt 9 Legends on it. The graphics quality is quite appreciable. The colours are vibrant and have a pop element in them. The touch experience is fluid and smooth while the response to the touch commands is swift. This, coupled with the stereo sound of the smartphone, takes the entire gaming experience to the next level. Overall, the design of the Xiaomi 12 Pro 5G is modest. Speaking of it display, its curvy edges surely add a character of elegance to the smartphone, apart from enhancing the streaming experience. Although the brightness of the screen is impressive indoors, its outdoor intensity has a scope of augmenting. Read also: iQOO Z6 Review: Great Design And Camera Quality At This Price

Elaborating further on the Xiaomi 12 Pro specifications, the device is offered with 8GB/12GB RAM in combination with 128GB/256GB internal memory. The nano dual-SIM supporting phone comes with a Qualcomm SM8450 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (4 nm) Octa-core processor and Adreno 730 GPU. It has a 4,600mAh battery capacity, which supports 120W fast charging. Wireless charging, as well as reverse wireless charging, is part of the package too. The phone can get fully charged in about half an hour via fast charging through a traditional wall socket. Overall, it has a good battery life. Upon mild usage, it can last for more than 2 days while upon moderate to heavy usage, it can last for about 1.5 days.
Users get to enjoy Android 12 OS on the brand new smartphone with MIUI skin on top. The interface is pretty easy and efficient to use. Apps on the home screen come already classified within different folders based upon usage, which you can modify according to your personal requirements. The app drawer also categorises the apps based on their utility. Icons have a square shape and their size, look and feel is quite comfortable for usage. The screen appears vibrant and colourful while the touch is soft and fluid. The device, however, seems to get heated up easily even with moderate usage when under warm weather conditions found in New Delhi, India. The 4-speaker stereo audio system of the Xiaomi 12 Pro 5G is tuned by Harman Kardon. You would notice the Harman/Kardon branding on the top side of the frame as well. In terms of loudness, the audio works satisfactorily. Setting the sound to 70% or more would give you a majestic experience through the device. During gaming, the audio loudness sinks slightly to the lower side. However, we feel pumping the audio a little bit more could have made it even more thrilling.
Coming to the Xiaomi 12 Pro camera review, it comes with a 50MP+50MP+50MP triple rear camera system along with a 32MP selfie camera. Six zoom modes are provided for its rear cameras, 0.6x, 1x, 2x, 5x, 10x, and 20x. No zoom options are provided for the front camera. Moreover, zoom options are provided even with the Night Mode and the 50MP Mode for the rear camera. Videos can be recorded from the rear camera up to a whopping 8k resolution at a 24fps frame rate and in 4k at both 30fps and 60fps rates. From the front camera, recordings can be made with a resolution of up to 1080p at both 30fps and 60fps frame rates. A noteworthy point that can be highlighted as a huge plus of its rear triple-camera system is that the quality of the zoom modes continues to stay put up to at least 5x, without any compromise in the clarity of the image. The range of the zoom itself is appreciably deep as we move up on the scale. In the standard Photo mode from the rear camera, the colours in the frame appear bright and full of contrast, appealing to the eyes. The colour range is also pretty wide. The Portrait mode does its job well and enhances the image quality even more. The fineness in clarity of the captures deserves an applause. In bright light, shots appear vivid. Even if the natural lighting in the environment is slightly low, the camera automatically brightens up the images and adjusts colour saturation accordingly. The rear camera Pro mode lets you set the focus, ISO, lens, and a range of other factors according to your requirements. Tweaking these settings helps you capture the perfect image under any external conditions. The Night mode in the device is offered for both the front and the back cameras, and works up to the mark. In low light, from the rear camera, it increases the brightness of the colours in the frame to a great deal. Details are captured very well. The whites and blacks within the images are adjusted to good extents, based on the requirements of a particular colour shade. Overall, the shots appear quite captivating and attractive. The colour scheme in the selfie camera frame is bright and pleasant. Under well-lit conditions, especially indoors, the shots have commendable clarity. The selfies slightly soften your skin tone to enhance your overall looks, but makes it appear natural at the same time. The AI mode of the rear camera recognises the in-frame conditions and adjusts the settings accordingly. For example, the element of greens within the images increases in case foliage is being captured. Overall, the camera package offered with the Xiaomi 12 Pro 5G is astounding. The AMOLED display provides a delightful video streaming and gaming experience while its curvy edges add to your excitement. The smartphone may need to tune up its sunlight legibility. The brand may also need to work on the issue of the heating of the device. But other than that, it is a wonderful choice to go for, although the price range might fall slightly on the higher side. Geekbench 5 CPU benchmark gives it a single-core score of 1,047 (the highest amongst all devices), and a multi-core score of 2,935.
